7. Birmingham & WM v Leicester City Women

Another of the many all-WPL ties in the first round, game number 7 sees Birmingham & West Midlands of Midlands Division One take on Leicester City Women of the Northern Division.

Birmingham & WM were newcomers to the Premier League last season and finished in a very respectable 5th place, Leicester meanwhile won promotion after taking the Midlands Division One title with 22 wins from 22 games. Obviously, with their 100% record, Leicester won both league meetings with Birmingham & WM last season; 5-3 at home and 2-0 away. Birmingham did well to restrict their free-scoring opponents to two goal margins of victory on both occasions, as Leicester won many of their games by larger margins.

Birmingham & WM have already played two games in this season’s FA Cup, while Leicester are making their first appearance. Birmingham beat Leicester City Ladies in the third qualifying round and The New Saints in the fourth. Both of these games were played away from home, so this tie will be their first home game in the competition.

In last year’s FA Cup, Leicester progressed all the way from the third qualifying round to the third round proper, where they were beaten by Women’s Super League side Sheffield.

My prediction: I think that Leicester City Women will be too strong for Birmingham & West Midlands, and I can see them winning this game quite comfortably.
