11. RACA Tynedale v Newcastle United

Tie number eleven of the first round is another north-east derby, this time between Tynedale and Newcastle United. Tynedale are currently playing in the Premier Division of the North East Regional League, while Newcastle play two levels higher up the pyramid in the Women’s Premier League, Northern Division.

Newcastle have had a tough first half of the season and find themselves sitting bottom of the league with just two wins from their opening nine games. Tynedale’s season to date has been slightly more successful and they currently lie mid-table in their division. They have also beaten WPL opposition on their way to the first round proper: following a walkover against Rutherford and a 5-1 victory over Workington Reds, they earned a 2-1 win over Crewe Alexandra of Northern Division One in the fourth qualifying round.

Tynedale have already greatly improved on last season’s FA Cup record, when they were eliminated at the first hurdle in the second qualifying round. Newcastle meanwhile made it as far as the third round proper last time around, where they were heavily beaten by Charlton Athletic.

With Newcastle struggling for form, Tynedale will see a chance to pull off a shock against their more illustrious neighbours. They will have to put in a hell of a performance, but the opportunity is definitely there.

My prediction:  If it happens it will be a huge upset, but Tynedale will be up for this game and maybe, just maybe, they could nick a result against a team struggling for confidence.
