22. Lewes v Brislington

Women’s Premier League newcomers Brislington will be travelling to East Sussex on Sunday to take on Lewes in tie number 22 of the FA Women’s Cup first round.

Bristol-based Brislington are the reigning South West Women’s Football League champions. Now playing in South West Division One of the WPL, they are currently in a respectable mid-table position having picked up 4 wins from 11 games in their debut season at that level. In the cup they have fought their way past Torquay United and Poole Town to reach the first round, but will now have to face a team from a higher division for the first time in this season’s tournament.

Lewes, who right now are sitting in the bottom half of the WPL Southern Division table, are making their first appearance in this season’s FA Cup. Last year they reached the third round, beating Fulham Foundation in the second round before being stopped by Loughborough Foxes, while Brislington’s 2015/16 FA Cup campaign was ended at the third qualifying round stage by Maidenhead United.

Brislington may find hope in the fact that Lewes have already lost to WPL Division One-level opposition this season. They were beaten on penalties by Cambridge United in the determining round of the WPL Cup, placing them into the WPL Plate draw. Their progress through the plate has been quite remarkable, in that they received a bye in the first round, were awarded a walkover against Maidenhead United in the second round, and had another walkover against St Nicholas in the third round – meaning they have got as far as the quarter finals without kicking a ball!

My prediction: A tricky one this. I think it could go either way, but I think the home advantage will edge Lewes past their Bristolian opponents.
