23. West Ham United v Coventry United

Tie number 23 of this year’s FA Women’s Cup first round is an all-WPL Southern Division match-up, bringing together West Ham United and Coventry United at West Ham’s home in Thurrock.

West Ham have had a turbulent time off the pitch this season, culminating in the women’s team being brought under the auspices of the men’s club in October. The off-the-field distractions may or may not be partly to blame for their poor start to the season, picking up just five points from their first eleven league matches. Coventry on the other hand have started the campaign strongly, only losing one of their eight league matches played so far.

Both teams are making their first appearance in this season’s FA Cup. Both of them, along with all WPL Northern & Southern Division sides, received an exemption to the first round. Last year both teams were eliminated at the third round stage: West Ham defeated by Blackburn Rovers; Coventry lost out to Sporting Club Albion (now West Bromwich Albion).

The teams have already faced each other twice this season in the WPL, with both games being won by Coventry. They won 1-0 at home back in September, before “hammering” the Londoners 5-0 in Essex at the end of October.

My prediction: Coventry have enjoyed by far the better form than West Ham this season, and I can only see that continuing here. Coventry United to win.
