28. Regents Park Rangers v Keynsham Town

The 28th and final tie of the SSE Women’s FA Cup first round proper sees Keynsham Town town of WPL South West Division One travel to Regents Park Rangers of the Greater London Women’s Football League.

Regents Park are one of five teams remaining in this year’s FA Cup who play at level 6 of the women’s football pyramid, making them one of the lowest ranked teams still left in the competition, so they will have their work cut out taking on WPL opposition. They reached the first round by beating Burgess Hill Town, Royston Town and Chesham United, the latter two of whom play their league football one level higher than Regents Park.

Keynsham’s path to the first round went through Buckland Athletic and Chichester City – the 2-1 win on Chichester’s home ground helping to avenge a 6-0 defeat to the same team in the first round of last year’s FA Cup. Regents Park Rangers also lost heavily in last season’s tournament, a 9-0 thrashing at the hands of AFC Wimbledon ended their cup run almost before it began in the first qualifying round.

Keynsham have had a decent start to their league season, five wins from their eight games so far have put them in third place in the league, and next weekend they are due to face Leicester City Women in the quarter final of the WPL Plate. Regents Park are currently sitting in the bottom half of their league, in sixth place out of ten teams with three wins from their opening eight games.

My prediction: Regents Park Rangers are huge underdogs here, and although they will no doubt raise their game against their WPL opposition, I can only see Keynsham moving on to the next round.
