SSE Women’s FA Cup preview -7. Liverpool Marshall Feds v Newcastle United

Tie number seven is the final northern region match-up in the second round, and is in fact also the final northern region tie of this year’s Women’s FA Cup, as the draw becomes national from the third round onward. It sees Liverpool Marshall Feds of WPL Northern Division One face Northern Division side Newcastle United, with the winner having the possibility of testing themselves against WSL opposition in the next round.

Newcastle reached the second round thanks to a 3-0 victory in a local derby against North East Regional League side RACA Tynedale. Feds meanwhile secured an impressive penalty shoot-out win over Northern Division Stoke City with the score at 1-1 after extra time, and have also shown good form in the WPL Cup, where they were one of only two Division One sides to reach the quarter finals.

A look at the form of the two sides since the first round matches shows Feds had a 2-0 defeat to Cardiff City in the aforementioned WPL Cup quarter final as well as a 1-0 victory over Chorley in the League. Newcastle have been struggling to string a series of decent results together in the league, and that showed in their scorelines over the same period – a goalless draw with Bradford City and a 5-0 loss to West Bromwich Albion.

My prediction: After picking both of these teams to lose in the first round the pressure is on for me to get this one right! Newcastle are bottom of the league and haven’t beaten WPL opposition since late October, while Feds have been in excellent form of late, so this game has got the definite air of a cup upset about it. However, Newcastle will be going all out to salvage some pride from what has been a difficult season for them, and I think the difference in divisions may well be too much for Feds to overcome a second time, so I’m going for a Newcastle United win.
