SSE Women’s FA Cup preview – 8. Coventry United v MK Dons

Our FA Cup second round preview moves into the southern section of the draw now by looking at tie number eight, which sees Coventry United take on Milton Keynes Dons.

Both teams are going great guns in the league this season and are both within touching distance of the top of the table. Coventry are in their second season playing in the Southern Division, having been moved from the Northern Division in 2015 when Copsewood (Coventry) relocated to Nuneaton, and have already established themselves as one of the stronger teams in the division. This season they have won eight of their ten league matches and are second in the table, three points behind current leaders Tottenham Hotspur.

The Dons’ league performance is also impressive. Their eight wins from twelve games puts them in third place in the South East Division One table, just two points away from first-placed Cambridge United.

MK are yet to play a team from a higher division this season, but Coventry have already shown dominant form in their matches against Division One teams in the WPL Cup, thumping Maidenhead United 9-0 in the Determining Round before recording a 3-0 win over Denham United in round two.

Since winning their respective FA Cup first round matches on 4 December, both teams have been in very stong form. MK Dons have beaten Lowestoft Town 6-2 and Stevenage 2-0, both in the league, and Coventry United twice triumphed over C & K Basildon in the Southern Division (3-0 away and 6-0 at home).

My prediction: Here we have an exciting match-up between two very strong teams, both in excellent form and both capable of progressing to the next round. I think that a Coventry United side, brimming with confidence, will be just that little bit too much for the Dons to overcome though. As reigning WPL Plate champions, Coventry have proven they know how to win cup matches, and I think they’ll be recording another win this weekend.
