SSE Women’s FA Cup preview – 11.Tottenham Hotspur v Gillingham

Tottenham Hotspur will take on Gillingham in tie number 11 of this year’s Women’s FA Cup in a battle of two teams who have undefeated league records.

Spurs are currently top of the WPL Southern Division with nine wins and a draw from their ten games played, while Gillingham’s five wins and three draws from eight puts them in fifth place in South East Division One – although their numerous games in hand over their divisional rivals mean there’s a very good chance they could soon be much nearer the top spot.

One noticeable feature of both teams’ league records is how tight their defences have been. Gillingham have conceded a measly six goals in their eight games, at an impressive average rate of 0.75 goals per game. Tottenham have been even more solid than that, allowing their opponents to score just three times in their ten league matches – that’s 0.3 goals per game.

Since winning in the previous round of the FA Cup both sides have been in excellent form. Gillingham have only played once since then, but that game was a dominant 9-0 league victory over Denham United. Tottenham have had two wins since beating Leyton Orient in December – a 4-1 WPL Cup quarter-final victory over Crystal Palace and a 4-0 triumph over Portsmouth in the league.

Despite playing in different divisions, this will actually be the second competitive meeting between these teams this season: back in November Tottenham recorded a 4-2 win over the Gills in the WPL Cup. They are familiar adversaries in the FA Cup too – Spurs knocked Gillingham out of this competition at the third round stage last season, courtesy of a 1-0 victory.

My prediction: Gillingham are undoubtedly a tremendously strong team, but Spurs‘ dominance in the Southern Division, and their recent record against the Gills, lead me to go for a Tottenham Hotspur win.
