SSE Women’s FA Cup preview: Leicester City Women v Liverpool Marshall Feds

The fifth tie to be drawn out of the hat for the third round of the Women’s FA Cup was Leicester City Women versus Liverpool Marshall Feds – the only game at this stage of the competition that features a WPL Premier team facing one from WPL Division One. The other four Division One teams to make it this far have all been matched up against WSL opposition, so Feds should have the best chance of any side at that level of making it through to the fourth round.

Leicester were promoted to the WPL Northern Division last summer after securing the Midlands Division One title in dominant fashion, winning all 22 of their league games. They are settling in well at that level too, currently lying fifth in the table, but with games in hand over all the teams above them. Feds were runners-up in Northern Division One last year behind Middlesbrough, who took the league championship and promotion to the Northern Division.

If I was to choose one word to sum up Feds’ cup form this season it would be “superb”. They reached the quarter-finals of the WPL Cup, winning four times on the road before going down 2-0 at home to the Southern Division’s Cardiff City, and have also seen off higher-level opposition twice in the FA Cup. Their victories over Stoke City and Newcastle United, both of the Northern Division, show that they do not need to fear teams playing in the division above them.

With a potential meeting with one of the big guns of WSL 1 now just two games away, not to mention £1000 prize money for winning on Sunday, there is a great deal for both teams to play for this Sunday.

My prediction: Liverpool Marshall Feds are one of the stronger teams at their level, and their results in the FA Cup so far have shown they are more than a match for teams in the Northern Division. Can they cause yet another upset though? I’m not so sure. I’m picking Leicester to with (although with a very low level of confidence!)
