SSE Women’s FA Cup preview: Coventry United v Oxford United

Tie number 7 of the third round sees WSL2 side Oxford United travel to Coventry United of the WPL Southern Division.

Both of these teams were eliminated at the third round stage last year, so whoever wins this game will have improved on their previous performance. Oxford in particular will be hoping to improve on last year, when they were hammered 10-0 by eventual WPL champions Brighton & Hove Albion.

Coventry have already had two comfortable wins in this year’s tournament and have yet to concede a goal. And it’s not just the FA Cup where they are performing well – it’s a similar story in the Southern Division, the WPL Cup and the Birmingham County Cup.

In those competitions they have played a total of 17 games, winning 14, drawing once and losing twice. They have managed to score 80 goals and conceded just 7. In other words, this is a team in terrific form, who will be brimming with self belief.

Oxford on the other hand had a difficult time of it last season. As well as their aforementioned FA Cup defeat, they finished second from bottom of WSL2, with only Watford below them in the table. The off-season break will have given the players a chance to recharge their batteries though, so a good result here will help put the memory of a disappointing season behind them.

My prediction: Coventry have been superb this season, and have swept away virtually every opponent put in front of them. Only Crystal Palace and Spurs have found a way to beat the Midlands club, so Oxford have got a serious job on their hands if they want to reach the fourth round. I’m predicting an upset here – Coventry United to win.
