SSE Women’s FA Cup preview: West Bromwich Albion v Lewes

Eight is magic number as far as the game between West Bromwich Albion and Lewes is concerned: it was the 8th tie out of the hat in the third round draw, and features the 8th-placed team in the WPL Northern Division taking on the 8th-placed team in the Southern Division. West Brom have even scored 8 goals so far in this season’s FA Cup, though slightly disappointingly Lewes break the pattern by only having scored 7.

West Brom excelled themselves in last season’s FA Cup, progressing all the way to the quarter-finals. They were the only WPL team to reach this stage, eventually losing 2-0 to WSL champions Manchester City. Lewes meanwhile only managed to reach the fourth round, where they were knocked out on penalties by Loughborough Foxes.

Both teams have done well in the WPL’s cup competitions this season. West Brom reached the quarter-finals of the Cup, while Lewes are due to play in the Plate semi-finals next month.

My prediction: This should be a closely-fought tie, but I think West Brom will have the slight edge here. Home win.
