FA Cup: Durham v Everton

SSE Women’s FA Cup fourth round

Date: 19 February 2017
Kick-off: 2 pm
Venue: New Ferens Park, Durham, DH1 1GG
Admission: £5 adults, £2 concessions

Durham face Everton in the first tie of the fourth round, with both teams having recorded seven goal winning margins over WPL Division One opposition in the third round. Durham made the long journey to Keynsham Town, where they were 7-0 victors, while Everton had a significantly shorter trip to beat Brighouse Town 8-1.

This should be an interesting look at two of the stronger sides in WSL2 just a week after the WSL Spring Series started for teams in the second flight. They were both involved in the four-way scrap for the WSL2 promotion places last season, which saw Westcountry duo Yeovil Town and Bristol City take the two available spots in WSL1.

Their two league meetings last season saw Everton win 3-1 at New Ferens Park, while the return fixture resulted in a 1-1 draw, but Durham’s addition of goalkeeper Rachael Laws to their squad this week should make it tougher for Everton to pull off another victory.

Durham have never gone beyond the fifth round of the FA Women’s Cup. They have reached that stage twice in the last three years though, so a win this weekend will make it three times out of four attempts. Everton are twice winners of the tournament, and were semi-finalists as recently as two years ago and runners-up the year before that, so Durham will have a tough task if they are to progress to the next round.

My prediction: The form book says it should be Everton through to the fifth round, thanks to their strong finish to the 2016 WSL2 season, allied with the fact that they have never lost a match to Durham. The north-east side have shown significant improvements year-on-year throughout their brief history however, so could be dark horses to take the win, but I think we’ll be seeing Everton in the draw next week.
