Two more county cup titles were decided last night, with the Berkshire & Buckinghamshire and Lancashire FAs both holding their cup finals.
The Berks & Bucks Women’s Senior Cup provided something of a cup upset, with Chesham United of the Southern Region Women’s Football League defeating the WPL’s Milton Keynes Dons 2-1.
Chesham, who are guaranteed a third place finish in the league with one game remaining, took the lead in the first half through a Gemma Fraser goal, but Heather McDonnell equalised for the Dons shortly afterwards to make it 1-1 at the break. The deciding goal came early in the second period when Niamh Euman headed in to give Chesham the lead for the second and final time.
Milton Keynes could see their outside chance of taking the WPL South East Division One title slip away this weekend too. Although not in action themselves, a point for league leaders Gillingham against second-from-bottom Norwich City will eliminate the Dons from the title race.
The Lancashire FA’s Mercure Dunkenhalgh Women’s Challenge Cup was an all WPL Northern Division affair between table toppers Blackburn Rovers and third-placed Fylde.
Blackburn are already assured of the Northern Division title with two games still to play, and they added the county cup alongside it in their trophy cabinet thanks to a narrow 1-0 victory.
After a scoreless first half, Faye McCoy headed in the only goal of the game late on to win Blackburn the trophy for the eleventh time.
